The Story of Gudikal
From a temple hamlet on the Rayalaseema plateau to a connected Smart Village — five eras that shaped Gudikal.
- Ancient
Before 1300 CE
The Temple Hamlet
Gudikal grew around a stone Shiva shrine — 'gudi' (temple) and 'kallu' (stone) give the village its name. Inscriptions nearby record grants of tank-irrigated land to the temple by Vijayanagara-era chieftains.
- Medieval
1300 – 1800
Tank & Trade
The great Gudikal Cheruvu (village tank) was deepened and bunded, turning dry plateau into paddy land. Weekly cattle and grain fairs made the village a small trading stop on the Kurnool–Bellary route.
- British Period
1800 – 1947
Ryotwari Records
Under the Madras Presidency, land was surveyed and settled under the ryotwari system. The first primary school opened in 1912 in the temple mandapam, and a metalled cart road linked Gudikal to Kurnool town.
- Independence
1947 – 1990
Panchayat Raj Takes Root
Gudikal elected its first Gram Panchayat in 1959. Rural electrification arrived in 1968, the KC Canal ayacut expanded irrigation, and the Zilla Parishad High School was established in 1974.
- Modern Development
1990 – 2018
Roads, Water, Schools
Cement roads under PMGSY, protected drinking water schemes, a Primary Health Centre, and self-help-group led micro-enterprise changed daily life. Mobile networks connected every hamlet by 2012.
- Smart Village
2018 – Present
Digital Gudikal
Fibre broadband, solar street lighting, e-panchayat services, drip-irrigated horticulture and this citizen portal mark Gudikal's transition into a model Smart Village under the state's Smart Village–Smart Ward programme.
